Dele Alli revealed his battle with addiction while disclosing heartbreaking truths about his upbringing in an interview with Gary Neville's podcast, The Overlap.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, the 27-year-old established himself as a household figure at Tottenham, winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award for his efforts in the 2015–16 campaign, and earning a spot in Gareth Southgate's England team for the 2018 World Cup.

Due to his troubles with recurrent injuries, Alli finally fell out of favour at Tottenham, and in January 2022 he signed a transfer agreement with Everton before being loaned out to the Turkish team Besiktas.

The plan didn't pan out, and Alli has since revealed that he had to go to rehab for six weeks this summer after becoming addicted to sleeping pills.

Here are the main ideas that came out of Alli's interview.

"So, when I returned from Turkey, I discovered that I needed an operation and that I was in a bad place mentally. So, yeah, I made the decision to go to like a contemporary rehab facility for mental health." They address issues like addiction, mental health, and trauma because I thought it was about time.

"I think with things like that, you can't be told to go there; I think you have to know, and I think you have to make the decision yourself, otherwise, it's not going to work and yeah, to be honest, I was caught in a bad cycle - you know."

I was relying on things that were harming me, but I also believe that I was winning every day when I woke up. You know, I would smile as I went to training and project happiness.

When I was hurt and told I required surgery, I could feel the emotions I get when the cycle starts, and I didn't want it to happen any longer. But on the inside, I was obviously losing the battle. It was time for me to change it.

"So I went there and spent six weeks there, and Everton were amazing about it," she continued. They gave me their whole support, and I will always be grateful to them.

Whatever happens in the future, I believe I couldn't have asked for more from them at that moment when I was presumably making the most important decision of my life, something I was frightened to make. However, I'm glad I did it because, to be completely honest, I couldn't have predicted how it would turn out.

Alli stated that he needed time to talk about his tragedy.

that, I believe I left rehab three weeks ago, and if I'm being completely honest, I probably wouldn't have wanted to discuss it that soon. Give it a little more time, in my opinion, but I am in a great mood and feel capable of completing this; that, in my opinion, is crucial.

"I probably could have used a little more time in terms of when I was talking about it, but unfortunately the way the world is now - you know the tabloids - they found out and were calling my team frequently and telling, you know, that they knew where I was and stuff," the speaker said. And if I had done it in the past, when I didn't really care what people thought or how I came across, I probably would have just let them write what they wanted to write and let them publish their own stories, which is something they frequently do.

But that's not the case, and I also want to let others know that they are not alone in their feelings, that they can communicate to others, and that asking for help or being vulnerable doesn't make you weak. That has a great deal of strength. I'm pleased to share my story and come out as a result.
