Commonwealth Games 2023

Reuters, July 18, MELBOURNE - Due to anticipated cost overruns, the Commonwealth Games will not be held in Victoria, Australia, in 2026, putting the quadrennial multisport event's survival in jeopardy.

The cost of the Games, which were scheduled to take place in four regional centres, could exceed the estimated A$2.6 billion ($4.8 billion), according to Victoria state Premier Dan Andrews.

At a press conference, Andrews stated, "Frankly A$6-A$7 billion for a 12-day athletic event, we're not doing that.

I won't use funds from hospitals and schools to pay for an event that will cost three times as much as was anticipated and budgeted for the previous year.

The cost of terminating the 2026 contract has not yet been determined, according to Andrews, who added that Victoria has previously told the international governing body Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) in "amicable meetings".

Neither Commonwealth Games Australia nor the CGF immediately responded to requests for comment.

Four of the last five editions of the sporting competition, which is mostly for former British colonies, have been hosted in Australia or Great Britain.

After South Africa lost the right to host the 2022 Games in 2017 due to inadequate preparations, Birmingham, England, stepped in to take over.

When no other nations expressed interest in hosting the 2026 Games, Victoria stepped in to make a proposal.

The legacy advantages of new infrastructure in the regional hubs of Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, and Gippsland, as well as a more than A$3 billion economic boost from tourism and thousands of new jobs, were highlighted by officials.

Asw a state, we were obviously eager to assist, but obviously not at any cost and only if there were long-lasting advantages for Victorian communities and advantages for the entire state, according to Andrews.

Instead, the government would invest more than A$2 billion in a "regional package" that included A$1 billion set aside for social and affordable housing together with the construction of all permanent sporting facilities needed for the Games.

Shortly after the news, Australian sports officials promoted New South Wales, the largest state in the nation, as a potential host for 2026.

Olympics 2000 were held in Sydney, the state capital of NSW.

According to John Coates, a vice-president of the International Olympic Committee and the former head of the Australian Olympic Committee, "there's no doubt we have the venues, and March would be a good time to host it."

In 2023, will there be a Commonwealth Games?

Australia's Queensland hosted the most recent Commonwealth Games in 2018. In 2023, Birmingham, England, will host the Commonwealth Games. Five times have the games been held in Australia: Sydney, 1938.

The following Commonwealth Games will be held when and where?

The 22nd and most current Commonwealth Games took place in Birmingham from July 28 until August 8, 2022. When the 2026 Commonwealth Games are staged in four locations throughout the Australian state of Victoria from March 17 to March 29, they will be the first decentralised Commonwealth Games ever held.

For whom are the Commonwealth Games in 2030?

Canada

Canada's Hamilton, Ontario

The CEO of the Commonwealth Games Canada, Brian MacPherson, proposed that Canada serve as the host nation for the 2030 games, which would be held 100 years after the first British Empire Games, which were held there in 1930.
